You may know about W.E. B. DuBois’ theory of the “Talented Tenth” and the scientific theory that we only use 10% of our brain. What about the remaining 90%? BooksforBlacks.net is a literary community of people who love books and like to share information. We want to nourish, exercise and expand the other 90%.
I have been reviewing and recommending good books for many years. A few years ago I began reviewing books for the Baltimore Sun’s Jubilee Magazine. I’m the book reviewer for The National Newspaper Publishers Association, an organization that serves 15 million readers through more than 200 black-owned newspapers. I am also the book reviewer for the Martha’s Vineyard North Star. I have been a broadcast journalist with NPR’s Fresh Air for more than 10 years. It’s a pleasure working with such progressive and dedicated organizations, especially because of the quality of literature I am exposed to every day. BooksforBlacks.net was created to present information that is beneficial to our development as a community. There are a lot of good books out there, so I have enlisted some talented booklovers to help get the information out there in their particular fields of expertise. We review and recommend books on finance, technology, health, science, politics, arts and culture. We also have a literacy expert and an early childhood educator to evaluate books for children. Our criteria are good literature and good information. We also look to the college and university presses, as well as independent publishers, for good books that may be overlooked by traditional venues. Knowledge is power. Many of these books are not written by people of color, but are of immense benefit to people of color. Of course, we will bring you the best literature — fiction and non-fiction, by African American authors and other people of color. You don’t have to do anything but click on, and see what’s new and useful. Each month we’ll review books that we know will keep you up-to-date on what is happening in our world. Information is power. As we grow and develop our website, you’ll be able to chat online with other booklovers and read interviews with guest authors and guest experts. Let us know how we’re doing. Your suggestions are always welcome. Dorothy L. Ferebee ![]() |
